Poetry Slam 2017- not for the faint hearted!

The second Sirius College Poetry Slam took place on Thursday 26th October and was a resounding success as poets from grades 7 to 11 battled for the highest score while expressing their themes and dreams with the aid of rhythm and rhyme.

The judges were a mixture of staff and students and the event was co-hosted by Ms Jenny Mangan and visiting professional poet Ms. Jay. The audience was absolutely bowled over by the quality of the entrants’ performances and imagery. Themes covered the broad scope of human experience such as: the futility of war, life expressed as a marathon and a computer game, domestic violence and the light hearted comedy of T.S Eliot’s ‘Macavity the Mystery Cat’!

Students could choose to perform their own, original verse or they could opt to recite a well-known poem. Seamus Heaney’s and Ted Hughes’ seminal poetry anthology ‘The Rattle Bag’ was awarded to the highest scoring competitor in each year level category and this experience provided an appreciative, warm environment for those students who love to listen to and craft verse.
